Within a number of International Women's Day (IWD) events on the Southern Downs, Allora locals joined visitors and special guests for time shared.

The colourful Allora Community Circle gathering was enjoyed by Southern Downs Mayor, Cr Melissa Hamilton, who said this was a relaxing way to "celebrate the rights that have been won" and "think about those that are yet to be achieved".

In the days prior, Mayor Melissa attended a Zonta Warwick breakfast with guest speaker, Cathie Schnitzerling.

"Cathie spoke about the importance of the leaders that go before us and influence us, and how important they are for women stepping into leadership positions, whether that be in business, community groups or politics," the local leader said. "Those mentors, both men and women, are essential in guiding and supporting the next generation and without them we would lose so much inter-generational knowledge and experience.

"To all of the women and girls that contribute to our community, thank you for what you do and I hope that we now can support and inspire you to create a better place for all of us in the future."

Deputy Mayor Sheryl Windle echoed the importance of bringing "local girls and women together," saying, "(It is important) to support each other to increase their self-confidence and independence, while continuing to break down any barriers to enable them to know their own worth."

Cr Sarah Deane recognised "strength, resilience (and) kindness" on this yearly date of March 8. "From mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends to mentors, colleagues, and leaders, women play a vital role in our communities and in the world," Cr Deane said. "Today is not only about celebrating their achievements, but also about appreciating the impact they have on our lives and continuing to support equality, respect, and opportunity for all women."

Cr Morwenna Harslett added her voice of "supporting gender equality".

"International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of the vital role women play across the Southern Downs — in our businesses, farms, schools, community organisations and families," she said. "It’s a day to celebrate the achievements of local women, recognise their leadership and resilience and reaffirm our commitment to creating a region where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive. By supporting gender equality and championing women’s voices, we strengthen the entire Southern Downs community."

Zonta Stanthorpe will host an "upcyle afternoon tea" on March 21 at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds.
