A "grass roots" community committee has sprung up from the collective efforts of the Granite Belt Walk for the West's brilliant five-figure sum from the June 8 fundraiser, heading to help western communities.

Helped by the Lions and Rotary Clubs of Stanthorpe, spokesperson for the Granite Belt Walk for the West, Anne Hilton said $8,000 was raised to send to BlazeAid, and more.

"Combined with service club donations of $2000, there will be a total of $10,000 from the Granite Belt to assist western communities," she said publicly last weekend.

The thanks went to not only Lions and Rotary but the local Woolworths for donations to support hungry walkers.

"A huge thanks to Rotary Club of Stanthorpe for backing the event and providing the financial and administrative resources needed to make this fundraiser possible," she said. "(And) another huge thanks to Lions Club of Stanthorpe and their band of volunteers for feeding all the walkers with a delicious sausage sizzle. A special mention to Woolworths who generously donated sausages, bread and fruit for the day."

"We are forever grateful to be part of this wonderful community, that can band together to give back to BlazeAid and those that assisted us after the fires."

Here's what some younger folk told us on the day:

"It's fun to dress up and be raising money for people who need help," Mandy said.

"I am having a fun time with my family and dog," Taylah said.

"I like to think we can give back, it's a good idea," Tom said.

"This community is good at thinking beyond themselves and showing appreciation," Dan said.
