A veteran trainer, an apprentice jockey and a horse shared by a family produced the defining moment of Warwick Cup Day, with Capital Asset claiming the feature by the smallest of margins. Prepared by Sam Strazzieri and ridden by Jess Emmerson, Capital Asset edged out The Catch by just 0.01 lengths in the 166th Wickham Freight Lines / Maydan Livestock Transport Warwick Cup on Saturday, October 10. Last Chance Saloon finished third.

For Strazzieri, the victory was the reward for a new chapter after a lifetime in the floor-covering industry. Now preparing just one galloper, he races Capital Asset alongside family members Jason, Anthony, Dylan and Nicolas Strazzieri. Purchased online for around $20,000, the horse has given the family something far greater than a shared ownership interest: a place in Warwick Cup history.

The meeting began with rain, but the work of Warwick’s track team ensured a race-ready surface. As the afternoon unfolded, the skies cleared and sunshine arrived, setting the scene for the day’s feature.

Emmerson’s Cup success completed a winning double, following Almond Gold’s victory for Alyssa and Troy Sweeney in the Gross Wholesale Meats Maiden Handicap.

Aidan Keeley also rode two winners: Webinar for Stephen McLean in the Brownlie Concretors Maiden Handicap and Switchblade for Stephen Matthews in the Les Clarke Memorial.

Earlier, Apollo Ten won the Picklebet Sprint Series Final for Paul Butterworth and Sariah Champkin, while Australasia scored for Corey and Kylie Geran with Gary Geran aboard.

The Scott Ellis Memorial / Ranbuild Warwick Newmarket provided an upset when Simon Grimson’s Angara, ridden by Kenji Yoshida, defeated favourite Breezin’ at $21.

But the afternoon belonged to Capital Asset and the people behind him. At Warwick’s newly completed winning post, a fraction of a length became a moment to treasure, a reminder that country racing still offers a stage where one horse, a small stable and a family’s hopes can come together in triumph.
