As unpredictable early summer storms continue to nip at the heels of residents, council has its hands full both preparing and repairing.

Damage assessments and a major cleanup effort is underway at Warwick Airport after a destructive storm caused significant damage on November 3. Wind gusts of 153 km/h were recorded during the storm and the airport is temporarily closed.

Reports of damage are widespread. Aratinga Aviaries, near Warwick, reported that massive hail stones, “larger than golf ball size”, smashed parts of their aviary and said that quite a few wild birds that live on the property didn’t survive, including crested pigeons, finches and peewees.

Mayor Melissa Hamilton says that “our thoughts are with every resident who has been affected.”

The Mayor went on to describe recent damage.

“On Saturday 1 November 2025, the Pratten community experienced a severe weather event. The SES responded to approximately twenty (20) requests for assistance, relating to leaking roofs. In addition to roof leaks, damage was also identified to roof solar panels and vehicles. Council is liaising with affected residents. “

Council also opened the Pratten Waste Transfer Facility for three additional days – Wednesday “through Friday – to assist residents in clearing away debris.”

“On Monday 3 November, another severe storm passed through Warwick and several privately owned structures at the Warwick Aerodrome sustained damage as well as the terminal building and another Council building. Council is working closely with QHealth to manage the situation. Storm debris was cleared and the aerodrome reopened at 4pm on Wednesday5 November.”

“I want to encourage everyone to take care during the cleanup. Please check in on your neighbours, especially those who may need extra support. If you’ve been impacted, the Insurance Council of Australia’s website has helpful resources to guide you through the claims process.”
