Country Universities Centre (CUC) Southern Downs has marked a significant milestone for the region, celebrating the registration of its 100th student - a clear indicator of the strong demand for accessible, high-quality tertiary study support close to home.
Only four months since opening, the Centre has quickly become an essential resource for learners throughout Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora, Killarney, Tenterfield and surrounding communities. It now caters to a broad mix of students, from university undergraduates and postgraduates to VET participants and high schoolers completing Head Start programs.
CUC Southern Downs is a not-for-profit Regional University Study Hub located at 200 Dragon Street (TAFE Campus) in Warwick. It provides free study spaces and support for local people enrolled in tertiary education, helping regional learners thrive while remaining connected to their communities. The Centre is funded through the Australian Government’s Regional University Study Hubs Program.
Centre Manager Alyce Lotz said the achievement underscores the important role regional study hubs play.
“Reaching our first one hundred students so quickly is an incredible achievement and a testament to the passion and determination of learners in our community," she said. "We are honoured to support each student with a calm, safe, and empowering place to study, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.”
CUC Southern Downs Chair, Vic Pennisi said the rapid growth had exceeded all expectations and demonstrated the resilience and commitment of the local community.
“Every Australian cricketer dreams of reaching a century, and while we initially anticipated enrolling fifty students by Christmas, the Country University Centre Southern Downs has proudly reached that milestone far sooner. With the right people in place, an exceptional facility available to our students, and a welcoming, safe environment in which to study, we have achieved our first century.”
“Our one hundredth student was enrolled on November 7, just 121 days after our official launch. The journey to this point has certainly had its challenges, but the remarkable outcomes we have achieved far outweigh any obstacles encountered along the way.”
The Centre offers free access to purpose-designed study facilities, including quiet rooms, high-speed internet, kitchen amenities, printing, academic support, and a friendly environment tailored to tertiary learners. It is open to anyone undertaking university studies or working toward Certificate III qualifications or higher.
“I wish to acknowledge and extend my sincere gratitude to all those who have supported us throughout this journey,” Mr Pennisi said. “ In particular, I would like to recognise the invaluable contributions of our Board, our Centre Manager, Ms Alyce Lotz, and her assistant, Ms Lorna Moore, whose dedication and professionalism have been instrumental to our success. The achievements of any organisation are directly related to the calibre and commitment of the people who share its vision, and we are fortunate to have both a highly skilled Board and outstanding staff.”
“To our students, I offer my heartfelt thanks for placing your trust in us and for the many kind messages you have shared. You are the future leaders of our region and our nation, and it is a privilege to play even a small role in your educational journey. You are making a difference to our community already, and I cannot wait to hear what the future holds for you.
“At this significant milestone, I am reminded of the words of Margaret Mead: ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ “
As registrations continue to rise, CUC Southern Downs is preparing for its next stage of expansion, with plans for extended outreach into Stanthorpe and further engagement with the broader community.
Mr Pennisi said the centre’s focus now is the next goal which is “the double century, not out”.
