Ground was broken on the building site that promises to bring “security and dignity” to disadvantaged residents of the Southern Downs.

Assistant Minister for Planning, Housing and Better Regulation, Rebecca Young, arrived in Warwick last week to turn sod on the Law Road building site.

The 35 dwellings planned for the site will be a blessing for some women over 55 with children and women working in essential services locally.

“People who give so much to our communities,” Ms Young said to the group of developers, Mayor Melissa Hamilton, Cr Joel Richters, Brisbane political assistants and media gathered.

“What's happening here in Warwick is a great example of that a project that's thoughtfully designed community-backed and built to me real local need,” the assistant minister commented. “When housing is delivered well, it doesn't just build walls and roofs. It builds hope and stability for families, and it strengthens all of our communities.

Mayor Hamilton described the “critical need for housing in Warwick” with a rental availability of a slender 0.2 percent.  The mayor then welcomed Ms Young on what turned out to be a blustery spring day.

“Every time I’ve done a ribbon cutting or a soil turning, it is windy, so I do apologise for that,” Ms Young laughed, noting the weather was a challenge to everyone’s hair.

The state government promises to deliver 53,500 new social and community homes by 2044.

“It's a really big promise to Queensland families that we're getting homes out of the ground and into communities just like this one right here in Warwick,” Ms Young said.

The site will boast 35 new modular homes, built in partnership with Community Housing (QLD) Limited, that include 15 one-bedroom units; 15 two-bedroom units; and five three-bedroom units “all built to gold standard” with accessibility provisions and “built to last”.

Across the Darling Downs, 498 social and affordable homes are either in construction or under contract.
