Junior clubs join to form Warwick Cowboys juniors
Juniors become Warwick Cowboys
Junior rugby league will be played in Warwick under one banner, Warwick Cowboys Juniors, in the 2026 season. While some formalities have to be finalised, the Collegians and Eastern Suburbs junior clubs will be wound up at the end of the season and a special purpose meeting held to form the Warwick Cowboys Junior Rugby League Club in early November.
Collegians president Matt Collins said there was a lot of excitement about the new entity. “I haven’t heard any negative comments,” he said. “It has been a long time coming and will be good for the town. We hope to keep the players in the club a bit longer and hope the players and volunteers will move through to the senior Cowboys.” He said rugby league was important to a country town.
Eastern Suburbs vice president Robert Baguley said having players in the Toowoomba league under the banner of the Warwick Cowboys Juniors would give them more of a chance to be recognised by the Clydesdales. “Each club will be able to have their memorabilia in the existing clubhouses. The Warwick Cowboys Juniors will be able to use four fields, few clubs in the Toowoomba league or Queensland will be able to have games on four fields at the one time, they are now having cluster days with 90 games,” Baguley said.
Collegians treasurer David O’Leary said the Warwick Cowboys Juniors would have one new team next season with the addition of an under-11 girls tackle competition and most likely an under 15/16 development cup team.
“We had 327 registered players at Collegians this year and would hope to build numbers as the Cowboys juniors next year,” he said.
