Staff Report

There's no doubt that the main business district of Stanthorpe has been impacted by the works of the Streetscape plans, as is the nature of improvements. Plans have also been in the pipeline to update Warwick's main precinct, as reported in this newspaper in recent months and as flagged consistently by local council.

Our newspaper has gathered positive and negative comments from Stanthorpe locals and business owners about the work seen here, many of which are understanding of the need for updates, although others are critical of the timing and the impact to parking. Some business owners said they have lost revenue in the last few weeks especially.

The Town & Country Journal simply reports today on the questions and answers provided by the Southern Downs Regional Council that about the Streetscape project, which may not be known to readers. Comments about any happening in the region, especially works to shared spaces, are always welcome to us at editor@thedailyjournal.ink

What does the project include? This phase of the Stanthorpe Streetscape Project in High Street features road safety upgrades, vital underground water infrastructure improvements and beautification works.

Why is a new crossing being built? Following community consultation, a new raised pedestrian crossing is being built on the upper side of High Street, near Heritage Bank. This addition will ensure pedestrian safety and make accessibility improvements, allowing residents to access the medical clinics and new disability parking.

Why is the informal crossing being removed? The informal crossing is temporarily being removed to re-instate additional car parks. We are working with Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland to explore the viability to re-instate the informal crossing to a new location.

Why are some carparks being removed? This area of High Street will be transformed into a vibrant and community-focused space with alfresco areas and mature trees. In order to achieve this, as well as construct the pedestrian crossing, seven existing carparks will need to be removed. Council will continue to investigate options to reinstate additional carparks.

Who is Council working with to complete the project? Led by community vision, this next phase of the project will be built by Council’s Works team. Additionally, Council has collaborated with local artists and students from St Joseph’s School and Stanthorpe State High School, who have handcrafted ceramic tiles, wooden benches and ceramic sculptures that will be featured throughout the street.

What other works have already been completed? Previous Stanthorpe Streetscape projects through the 2015 masterplan have included Fromes Lane beautification and the creation of Doug Smith Carpark to increase the CBD’s parking capacity.

When will works commence and finish?

Works are due to commence on 4 March 2024 after the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival and are due for completion on 30 June 2024.
