Sacrifice honoured

Police Remembrance Day

By Selina Venier

Remembering the sacrifices of our police.
Remembering the sacrifices of our police.

Police Remembrance Day was marked on the Southern Downs with a gathering at the Warwick Uniting Church, and in countless other parts of our nation on Monday, September 29.

With the focus was on those present in uniform, the memory of the Wieambilla tragedy wasn't far from people's minds on the Southern Downs, in the tragic loss of the lives of Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold.

Neither were the sacrifices of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart in Porepunkah, north-eastern Victoria, on August 26 this year, and Constable Keith Anthony Smith who was fatally shot on duty in North Motton, Tasmania, on June 16.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton laid a wreath on the national Remembrance Day, joined by Deputy Mayor, Sheryl Windle and Councillors Russell Wantling, Ross Bartley, and Cynthia McDonald.

"It was a privilege to join with the community to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and (to) thank all officers for their commitment and the service they provide in keeping the Southern Downs safe," Mayor Hamilton told our newspaper.

In Brisbane, and all capital cities, there were marches to honour those who are mourned.
