Locals won't be seeing things when students and staff of St Joseph's School in Stanthorpe, and busloads of visitors, don their best (or worst) colourful, even "crazy," socks for charity.
The Southern Downs school was chosen for the national launch for the 2026 "Catholic Mission’s Socktober campaign", which has been described as a chance to highlight "strong commitment to social justice, community engagement and global awareness".
In even more colour, the school will welcome students and staff from St Joseph’s Primary School in Tenterfield, St Saviour’s College in Toowoomba and St Francis De Sales School in Clifton. Toowoomba Catholic Schools Executive Director, Dr Pat Coughlan and Catholic Mission representatives, will also visit.
Promoters tell us that the colourful day will be a mix of "learning, creativity and compassion," starting with a "welcome liturgy".
"By participating, young people learn about the challenges faced by communities around the world and discover how their efforts can contribute to meaningful change," a local spokesperson said. The campaign will specifically support children in Malawi, "helping provide access to food, education and the chance to build a brighter future".
There's also a planned focus on "sustainability ... (where students will be) encouraged to create their own socks using recycled or craft materials rather than purchasing new ones".
