Southern Downs Regional Council acknowledged the passing of industry legend Bob Hart who passed away recently, aged 100. Mr Hart was the patriarch of the family’s meat processing business, John Dee, in Warwick. He stepped down from running day-to-day operations in 2017 and remained active on the board until recent times.

Mr Hart was the much-loved uncle of John, Frank, Denise and Robert Hart.

The Hart family’s meat business was born in Brisbane in 1939, with some of the company’s early work focused on the war effort and the British Ministry of Food’s Bulk Beef Purchase Plan, according to the industry reporters Beef Central. The business shifted to Warwick in 1945 after taking over the Warwick bacon Company processing plant. Wholesale sales continued through the government-owned abattoir at Cannon Hill in Brisbane.

In chambers last week, local Mayor Melissa Hamilton extended condolences to the family. “Mr Hart’s life was one of service, dedication and quiet achievement," she said. "As a proud veteran of World War II, serving aboard HMAS Shropshire, Bob’s contribution to his nation was matched only by his commitment to his local community in the years that followed."

"Together with his brother Frank, Bob helped establish John Dee — a cornerstone of Warwick’s economy and one of the region’s most significant employers for decades. His vision and leadership not only created jobs but helped build a sense of stability and pride in our community."

"We also recognise the esteem in which Bob was held by his fellow veterans and by the Warwick RSL Sub-Branch, who honour his life and legacy through their service and remembrance. His century of life leaves a remarkable legacy of contribution, resilience and community spirit.

"The Southern Downs community celebrates a life well lived and mourns the loss of a truly respected citizen.”

Mr Hart’s funeral was held at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Warwick, on October 18. John Hart thanked all friends and relatives who attended the service.
